Monday, April 20, 2015 Springwood NSW 2777, Australia

Shay Tobin, 23 years, is an emerging Australian artist, photographer and a musician living in the Blue Mountains, Springwood.

As a freelance artist and photographer, he spends a big part of his day playing music. He has a vast collection of instruments including, electric and acoustic guitars, a banjo, a cello and bongo drums; which he all knows how to play very well. Shay has recently painted a mural symbolising nature’s persistence over social development with his mother at Macquarie University. His first exhibition was in 2010 at the Blacktown arts centre and was called Reside. It involved three emerging artists creating a photographic expression of Western Sydney.

His artwork and photography has been featured in several group exhibitions including: Reside, Blacktown Arts Centre (2010); Change has Come, University of Technology Sydney (2011); Naa no-rar, Blackheath Cultural Resource Centre (2011), Remarking Remaking, Blacktown Arts Centre 2012, Oscuro, Trackdown Studios, Sydney 2013.

Shay has a glass studio facing the bush that is his backyard that he shares with his mother at underneath their house. Shay gets his inspiration for his art through his music and his surroundings. His backyard leads into a bush trail which he frequents when he wants to get out of the house and clear his head.

Shay’s style is a cross between hippie and heavy metal. This is portrayed through his personal style, artworks, photos and his music. Amongst many things, Shay is inspired by the beauty of Australian bushland, music, movement and the intimacy of portraiture.
