An Interview with Adrian Lee | Photojournalism

Monday, July 27, 2015

Adrian Lee is a 24 year old multifaceted artist working from home, residing in Sydney.
Marcella: How did you get into this line of work?
Adrian: Art was the only subject I was interested in back in high school. I then studied art at TAFE for three years and it was really fun.
Marcella: What inspires you?
Adrian: I’d have to say that I’m my own inspiration, I don’t look at anything to get inspiration, I come up with ideas and do them.
Marcella: What’s your recent project?
Adrian: They’re clear resin skulls with dried roses on the top on a stand. They look like trophies but I think of them as totems.
Marcella: How did you come up with this?
Adrian: Skulls are one of my main subjects. I wanted to think of something to keep skulls fresh and cool and do something different. I do a lot of sculpture and I work a lot with resin and I like how the light catches the resin so I thought it would look cool. One of my main themes in my work is light and dark and I like how the resin really emphasises that.
Marcella: What was the process?
Adrian: When I come up with an idea, rather than sketching it on paper, I do a lot of mental sketching, it’s quicker that way. I visualised it from all angles, planned it out and moved on to making the skull using clay. When I got the basic shape I did a quick mould out of plaster then a wax cast for details. After the wax I moved onto the silicone and took a mould made from lego from the wax skull. I then mixed up the resin and then we had a resin skull. After the mould was done I had the idea to have the metal teeth. This is an example of not having the project 100% planned out. I did know I wanted to have resin dipped flowers from the beginning.
Marcella: Where will you be selling these?
Adrian: Olga Lewis has an online store and I’ve talked to Apache Rose located in Cronulla.
Marcella: How did they find out about you?
Adrian: I had a lot of people inquire about my work though my TAFE exhibitions. If I want to sell my work I have to keep it light. Sellers are editors in a way. You want to do what you want but you have to keep in mind that its business and they want something that they can sell. It’s good to pay attention to what’s popular.
Marcella: What’s next for you?
Adrian: I have two ways to do art, commercial and my own. Commercial art is a lot easier, you look at what will sell, but it’s not my passion. I don’t look for inspiration because I want the idea to originate from me and manifest that into the world. That’s why I do what I do; I make something that wasn’t there before.
